10th Annual #SilentWalkAndRun

The Annual #SilentWalkAndRun is the flagship fundraising and awareness event of the Neema Foundation for the Deaf, bringing together Deaf and hearing communities to champion inclusion, equality, and accessibility. Now celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the 2026 event marks #10YearsOfImpact—a decade of advocacy, empowerment, and creating opportunities for Deaf and hard of-hearing communities across South Africa. Unlike any other walk or run, hearing participants are encouraged to complete the fun walk/run in silence, allowing them community to experience, even briefly, the world of silence while fostering empathy, understanding, and meaningful connection to the Disability of Deafness.

Why We Walk/Run

The Annual #SilentWalkAndRun aims to:

  • Commemorating Deaf Awareness Month
  • Promote Deaf Awareness and Deaf culture.
  • Advocate for the recognition and use of South African Sign Language.
  • Encourage inclusion and accessibility for Deaf and hard-of-hearing persons.
  • Unite communities through a shared experience of silence.
  • Raise awareness and funds to support programmes benefiting Deaf communities.
  • Support initiatives addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) within Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.

Every step taken helps create a more inclusive South Africa where everyone can be heard, valued, and empowered.

Deaf Awareness Month

The event is held annually during Deaf Awareness Month in September, a global movement that celebrates Deaf culture, promotes sign languages, and advances the rights of Deaf people around the world.

The 2026 international theme, “Shine a Blue Light on Sign Languages,” encourages individuals, organisations, and communities to stand together in promoting sign language as a fundamental human right.
